Scott subtitled his composition Grace and Beauty quite self-consciously "a classy rag" which indeed it. It is generally considered that it is perhaps one of his finest rags, an opinion that I share myself. It has the same "classic" AABBACCDD form in the major flatted keys of A and D as does his earlier Frog Legs Rag (1906) but with a four-bar introduction. Some authorities suggest playing the C and D strains a little faster with more pronounced dynamics than the opening A and B strains, a device which works well in this recorder adaptation. The echoed dialogue between the voices in the latter strains is a particular joyous highlight. The front cover of the original sheet music shows a gracious young lady clad in winter attire replete with fur muffs accompanied by a pedigree pointer perfectly in accord with the temperament of this admirable piece.
