Great Scott Rag is indeed, as the title proclaims, a great Scott rag in AABBCCDD form whereby the A and B strains are in G major with the C and D strains in C-major. That old epithet "Great Scott!" is generally assumed to be a term of derision flung at one General Winfield Scott (1786-1866) when campaigning as a Whig candidate for the United States presidency. A national hero, he framed the General Regulations and introduced French tactics into the U.S. Army earning the sobriquet of "Old Fuss and Feathers". Amongst his many heroic deeds he routed Santa Anna in the Mexican War in 1847 and later framed the Anaconda Plan which was used to envelope the Confederacy during the Civil War. Fascinating as all this is, the rag itself is most enjoyable - even to the great general himself who would surely feel vindicated!
