"The Irish Rover" is a wonderful piece of nonsense that I came across in the Clancy Brothers'
The Irish Songbook. I introduced it to the
Idle Fellows but
Brian Kelly, of course, already knew it and had already worked out his own nice little chorus. The whole song is very amusing and is crammed full of fine lines to sing and the most preposterous of exaggerations. The Irish Rover suffered the same fate as the crew of the luckless ship in
Stormy Winds do Blow, namely that the ship swirled round three times and sank to the bottom of the sea with the exception that the singer was the sole survivor.
By the way, Brian's chorus is:
