Length: approx. 3 ½ mins. Sounds best with the 1st tenor doubled.
Sleepy Hollow Rag is indeed unique, a piece for which superlatives abound. In performing this piece, it should be remembered that the composer placed performance above composition. This is what Clarence Woods himself had to say:
This number is a decided novelty and should be played SOFT and SLOW. Particular attention should be paid to the sustainet notes and tremolos. They can be made to "stand out" without forcing them. This number can be played for anything except a waltz by slightly altering the style and tempo.
The tremolos given in this recorder adaptation in bars 1, 3, 9, 11, 33, 35, 41, 43, 69 and 70 reflect the editor's idiosyncrasy and debatable taste. Trilled semibreves may work equally well. Please experiment, the composer would most assuredly not mind!
