Length: approx. 3 ½ mins. Sounds best with descant doubled with garklein or sopranino.
Efficiency Rag is a very fine rag with many fine touches (especially in the B section for my taste) and dare it be said, an extremely efficient one too! Its form is AABBACCBB whereby the AABBA and CCBB sections are in the major keys of C and F respectively. Use of the garklein (or sopranino) comes into effect after bar 62 and is intended to avoid excessive "squeakiness" - please experiment. How the rag came to its title is no longer known. Perhaps it reflects it being one of the first wartime 4-page publications, a novelty when compared with its 6- to 8-page peacetime predecessors. Or it may even be that the Quaker publisher John Stark utilised some spare artwork for the cover of the original sheet music as it is hard to reconcile this jolly rag with the somewhat stern young lady staring at the horizon gracing the title page.
