Burning Rags, a straightforward syncopated two step, was "lovingly inscribed" by the composer to her mother. What the title has to with the music is very hard to conjecture after more that a century of ragtime history has passed. The cover of the original sheet music shows a dilapidated back yard with various domestic animals (poultry, swine and a goat) grazing on refuse around a smoky bonfire of rubbish. This all adds to the mystery. The two step itself has an AABBCCBB form with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the CC and BB strains. The A- and B-strains are fine soaring affairs with some nice walking bass touches whilst the C-strain is a little more reflective. The whole is a treble's delight, this instrument having the complete melodic line from start to finish.
