The Easy Winners is very fluid work and easy to understand. In this recorder adaptation, the bass and both tenor voices are especially required to perform very consciously of each other as the often share the melodic line.
The Easy Winners was published by Joplin himself because his own publisher, Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, did not do so for unknown reasons. Peter Gammond surmises that the reputable Stark had no wish to be associated with a piece extolling sport (horseracing et al) as was displayed the original cover.
A tempo of 72 crotchets/min. is suggested
This recorder adaptation is respectfully dedicated to Katrin Eickhorst-Squire, cellist and recorder player, Wellington, New Zealand, in remembrance of a workshop she held there in April, 2001.
