Hot Chocolate Rag could be considered a typical Tin Pan Alley ragtime composition. Bright and cheerful and yet not particularly demanding. Its form is of a 4-bar introduction followed by AABBCCA strains all in the key of G-major . The CC strains show some originality contrasting nicely with the somewhat easier A and B strains.
The cover of the original sheet shows a serious looking Negro baby seated in a highchair, arms outstretched reaching for a large cup of steaming hot chocolate beyond his reach. A pictorial pun of some wit!
Hot Chocolate Rag was published by Jos. W. Stern & Co., New York, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There are also treble solo, tenor solo and quintet versions of this item.
