Daniels wrote
Dark Eyes using the
pseudonym Neil Moret and he dedicated it to "his esteemed friend
Mr. J. Bodewalt Lampe . Its form is AABBCCDA with a 10-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the BB- and CC-strains whereby the AB- and CD-strains are written in the major keys of C and F respectively. The front cover of the original sheet music is illustrated by an appropriately dark-eyed beautiful Mexican maiden. This adaptation for recorder sextet delights with its habanera rhythms and its melodies, shared by the treble and 1st tenor, charm with their mood swings from doleful to happiness and from braveness to dreaminess.
