Whether the Whittling Remus shown on the cover of the original sheet music was an actual historic personality is lost in the ragtime history of more than 100 years ago. The composition itself is a happy, toe-tapping pleasing affair with many nice touches. Its form is AABBCCC with a 4-bar introduction and an 8-bar interlude before the final C strain. The interlude is a nice dialogue between the basses and the upper voices - something that could be really hammed up by such-minded ensembles!
Whittling Remus was published by H.A. French, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
A tempo of 148 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a treble solo version of this item.
