Joseph Franz Wagner (1856-1908)

Josef Franz Wagner was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer of some 400 compositions, 250 of which were published and amongst them three operettas are known namely Herzbub (1895), Der Kognakkönig (1897) and Der Soubrettenjäger(1905). He served as bandmaster of the 47th (Trieste) and 49th Infantry Regiments. In his day, Austrian military bands were financed privately by the regimental officers, a practice which resulted in intense competition for the best musical talent available. Today Joseph F. Wagner is best known for his march Under the Double Eagle (DBE 707 ) which was made popular by John Philip Sousa's band who recorded it at least three times.
