Under the Double Eagle is Wagner's best known composition and takes its title from the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian double monarchy. It is enormously popular and probably been performed by nearly every military band and brass ensemble throughout the world for constantly for more than a century. As mentioned above its popularity was established by Sousa's band who recorded it at least three times The march is today the official regimental march of the 1st Austrian Artillery Regiment No. 2. It has a straightforward form of ABACAB with a 16-bar introduction. Each strain is quite distinct, the bass players will especially enjoy the B-section which is scored basso marcato. Stirring stuff indeed!
A tempo of 120 crotchets/min. is suggested.
