Length: approx. 3¼ mins. Sounds best with the bass doubled.
Pastime Rag No. 3 is logically the third of Matthews Pastime Rags of which Rudi Blesh wrote in his Classic Piano Rags as being "virtuosic, wide ranging in concept and a five-chapter synopsis of the St. Louis ragtime scene. This fantastic rag is noted for and characterised by its long bass runs which will delight bass recorder players. Its form is AABACCDD with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the A- and C-strains. Here the AB- and CD-strains are written in the major keys of Bb and Eb respectively. This is a great ensemble piece as the action flows through all the voices. As with the other Matthews rags, this is definitely not for the timid.
Pastime Rag No. 3 was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 84 crotchets/min. is suggested.
