Pastime Rag No. 1 is logically the first of Matthews Pastime Rags of which Rudi Blesh wrote in his Classic Piano Rags as being "virtuosic, wide ranging in concept and a five-chapter synopsis of the St. Louis ragtime scene. This particular rag is noted for and characterised by its barrelhouse "walking" bass. Its form is ABBACC with a 4-bar introduction and a 4 bar interlude between the A- and C-strains whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the major keys of C and F respectively. Not an easy piece but a delight to master and is just the stuff for the brave hearted!
Pastime Rag No. 1 was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 74 crotchets/min. is suggested.
