Purchasing information Notice for leaders/bass players
Length: approx. 3¼ mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor and bass are doubled.
There are three versions of
The Junk Man Rag, the first was an arrangement by
Artie Matthews and the second an arrangement by
William H. Tyers which was also used in this adaptation for recorder. The Tyer's version was used for the song of the same name in 1914. The pundits find merits in both versions but also find that neither captures the brilliance and force of an actual Luckey Roberts performance. As to the piece itself it has an AABBACC form with a 4-bar introduction and a 12-bar interlude between the C strains. It is splendid ensemble piece in that all voices are fully occupied - no bar-counting here! It is also one of those rare adaptations where the descant is the lead instrument and has all the melodies.
The Junk Man Rag was published by
Jos. W. Stern & Co., New York, USA.
A tempo of 78 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a
descant solo version of this item.
