Hot-House Rag is a red-hot composition and, as an adaptation for recorder, an extraordinarily difficult piece to perform. Its form is ABBCCA with a 4-bar introduction, a 4-bar interlude between the BB and CC strains and an 8-bar interlude between the CC and final A strain. The first difficulty to surmount is in the A strain where the four melody voices play a rapid series of descending chords requiring exquisite precision and tonguing to produce the wanted effect. There is no relent in the B-strain which is characterised by stressed syncopated sixteenths exploring both the upper and lower registers. The C-strain provides no relaxation either with descending passages in close harmony. All-in-all an immensely rewarding piece to master, real hot stuff which, in keeping with the rag's title, could very aptly be performed in a hot-house - lot's of hot air for lots of hot fingers!
