Joplin respectfully dedicated The Cascades to "KIMBALL and DONAVAN, BANJOISTS" Joplin's publisher made no bones about proclaiming on the cover that this piece is "The Masterpiece of Scott Joplin" and a masterpiece it is indeed! It is a happy swinging number which should be played fairly fast. Blesh suggested that a gradual acceleration (not quite ragtime) can be used to good affect. The cascade of notes come in the second section in which all voices participate. The Cascades is also connected with the Cascade Gardens, a main item at the St Louis State Fair in 1904.
The Cascades was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and a piano roll made.
A tempo of 84 crotchets/min. is suggested

There is also a sextet version of this item.
