Length: approx. 5½ mins. Sounds best with doubled bass.
This was quite a challenge for the arranger, there are a few notes "leftover" hovering between 2nd tenor and bass but nowhere near enough to warrant a sixth part. Either an additional tenor or bass could be employed in the boring but demanding task of reproducing Joplin's exact composition. There are four sections using major keys B-flat, F, B-flat and A-flat.
Joplin dedicated The Chrysanthemum, this Afro-intermezzo to a certain Miss Freddie Alexander of Little Rock, Arkansas. "Afro" simply meant Negro. It is a happy, charming, light piece; a joy to both to play (especially for the 1st tenor) and to listen to.
The Chrysanthemum was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and a piano roll was produced.
