Length: approx. 3¼ mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor and bass are doubled.
Encore Rag is a pleasing, jolly rag. The piano score is completely devoid of ornamentation, dynamics and relative intensity leaving such musicality to the capabilities of the performer. It has the form of AABCCBAA with a 4-bar introduction. Trebor Jay Tichenor says that the B strain is identical to one in a classic barrelhouse recording by Will Ezell, Bucket of Blood. The cover of the original sheet music shows a dapper pianist seated at a grand piano in elegant surroundings being applauded, and in particular by a ball-gown clad groupie gazing smilingly at him. Was that the pianist's encore? In any case this piece makes an excellent musical joke to be performed as an encore on completion of a programme.
Encore Rag was published by O.K. Houck Piano Co., Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
