Good Gravy Rag is the other splendid Belding rag which was, according to the front cover of the original sheet music, featured in Vaudeville by Alexander and Belding. Another published version shows Madeline Rossiter inset above a gravy-boat of, wait for it, steaming gravy. Whatever Madeline Rossiter has to do with this composition is lost in ragtime history. As to this jolly, romping rag itself, it has an AABBACDD form with a 4-bar introduction and is written in the major keys of C and F. The contrasting strains are shared by the treble and the 1st tenor who have delightful solos in the B- and C-strains respectively. The A- and D-strains are heavily chorded affairs whereby all join in the fun. Another great ensemble piece and worthy companion to
Apple Sass Rag (1914)!
