According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Thomas Tallis was an English composer and organist; from 1572 joint organist with William Byrd of a state monopoly of music printing in England. Cultivated a solemn style of great contrapuntal ingenuity as seen in his Latin motet "Spem in alium" in 40 parts, i.e. for 8 choirs each of 5 voices. Wrote mainly church music, in Latin and then in English; also some pieces for keyboard, viols, etc. The so-called "Tallis's Canon" is an adaptation from one of a set of psalm tunes, 1567; Vaughn Williams's "Fantasia on a Theme of Tallis" (first performed in 1910) is based on another of the same set.
