According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Heinrich Schütz was a German composer; studied under Andrea Gabrieli in Venice and worked mainly as a court composer in Dresden; influential in introducing Italian musical ideas to Germany. Worked also in Copenhagen. Works include the earliest German opera, "Daphne" (music now lost); Italian madrigals; for voices and instruments.
