According to the Internet source given below, Winifred Atwell was a much-loved, and by me greatly admired, pianist born in Trinidad and who went on to enjoy international success in London and Australia. She rose to fame with her
Cross Hands Boogie and
George Botsford's
Black and White Rag (1908) and at her peak in the late 1950's and was the most commercially successful pianist of her day. She became a TV personality having her own shows both in the UK and Australia.
Personal remarks:
On radio in the 1950s, I often enjoyed Winifred Atwell who set an ember for the much later blaze in ragtime
.
