p_lawrencek.jpgAccording to the Internet source given below, Katie Lawrence was an English music-hall singer, best known for Harry Dacre's 1892 hit Daisy Bell published by Francis, Day & Hunter, London W.C.2, England.
At the age of thirteen she had already established herself as a singer and dancer on the music hall stage circuit. From 1885 she regularly performed in Ireland drawing the attention from literary figures such as George Bernard Shaw. It is said that she inspired James Joyce in using her name for one of his characters. in Ulysses (1922)
The Impressionist painter Walter Sickert produced some hundred and sixty-six preparatory sketches of Lawrence performing at Gatti's Hungerford Place of Varieties in 1887.
In 1888 Lawrence traveled widely to Australia, the United States and South Africa. She met Dacre in New York in 1892 and purchased the performing rights to Daisy Bell which became her greatest success. Her last published song was Why Can't I Be a Pal of Yours (1906 - words: Newton Butt; music: Herbert Rule.
She died in Birmingham, England.
