Length: approx. 3¾ mins.
Pearl of the Harem is a rag two step that charms with its apparent simplicity, especially in achieving oriental effects by way many passages of thumping straight bass chords. Its form is AABBACCBB with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AABBA- and CCBB-strains are written in the keys of G and C respectively. This is a great ensemble piece as a transcription for recorder quintet, the treble and 1st tenor share the melodies whilst the rhythm section has its share of fun. The pearl in question is shown on the front cover of the original sheet music as a dancing damsel a-beating a tambour.
Pearl of the Harem was published by Willard Bryant, Detroit, Michigan, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
