Harry P. Guy was an American ragtime pianist, composer of popular music born in Zanesville, Ohio. As a child he studied piano, violin and organ before moving to Cincinnati in the 1880s where he continued his musical education and published his first work, The Floweret Waltz (1890). In 1890 he was also in New York at the National Conservatory of Music where Victor Herbert was one of his professors. He became heavily involved in Black musical affairs and accompanied the Fisk Jubilee Singers. On completion of his studies he taught at Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas before moving to Detroit. He played with a number of Detroit ensembles and was the Music Minister at St. Matthew Episcopal Church in Detroit and founded the first African American Music Academy. Of ragtime interest is his much recorded Echoes From The Snowball Club (1898). He died in Detroit.
