According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Arcangelo Corelli was an Italian violinist, composer chiefly for his instrument, of which he was a celebrated exponent. In service as musician to a cardinal in Rome. More than anyone else, established the form of the concerto grosso; among his examples in this form is the so-called "Christmas Concerto".
