Length: approx. 3¼ mins. Sounds best with the 2nd tenor doubled.
Sweetmeats is a straightforward no nonsense piece in AABBCCDD form with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AB- and CD- strains are in the major keys of C and F respectively. As an adaptation for recorder quintet, it pushes the 1st tenor to the upper range limits of his or her instrument to the ultimate. Should this prove to be too difficult then a treble could be well used instead and bars 49-50 could be handed over either to the 2nd or 3rd tenor. The cover of the original sheet music is a slightly scary scene of Piccaninnies gazing avidly through a broken picket fence at a flock of brightly feathered chicks, presumably the sweet meats, either with consumption in mind or something more sinister enjoyed by malicious little boys. Whatever, its a great piece to perform and quite a challenge for the 1st tenor.
