Sans Toi, an all tenor/bass affair, is a beautiful set of three sad, melancholy waltzes. Its form is a simple ABCA with each strain being of 32 bars. The keys used are the recorder players' favourites of f- and c-minor for the AB- and C-strains respectively. The cover of the original sheet music shows a pair of brightly coloured sad-looking she and he dolls. Perhaps a separation due to the then ongoing World War I provided the inspiration for this piece. Who knows?
