Calico Rag is an enchanting, original rag of exquisite delicacy with some lovely tinkling touches which demand much precise co-ordinated tonguing by the melody voices in this transcription for recorder sextet. For my taste, this is the finest of Nat Johnson's rags. It has the sonata form of AABAACCAA with a 4-bar introduction. The cover of the original sheet music is a clever red, white and blue illustration of a pretty Miss with a basket of apples wearing appropriately a polka-dotted blue calico pinafore and cap against a background of the same material such that she is almost invisible except for her face, arms and basket.
Calico Rag was published by F.J.A. Forster Music Publisher, Chicago, Illinois, USA.
A tempo of 78 crotchets/min. is suggested.
