Swanee Rag has some nice catchy folksy strains of course spiced with snatches of
Stephen Collins Foster's famous
"Old Folks at Home". The front cover of the original sheet music shows a cliché ridden Swanee scene which includes a gap-toothed banjo player sat on a packing case before a riverboat stern-wheeler alongside a quay where cotton bales await stowage onboard. Its form is AABBACCC with a 4-bar introduction and a 16-bar interlude preceding each of the final two C-strains whereby the AABBA- and CCCC- strains are in the major keys of C and F respectively. The melodies are brought out particularly well in this all tenor/bass affair and the 1st tenor has the honour of having them all from start to finish.
