Silver King is described in the modest blurb on the back cover of the original sheet music as "probably the finest Rag ever written". This editor feels that whilst
Silver King is indeed a fine rag, this is one claim too far! The front cover shows a brave young handsome cowboy in a heroic pose - perhaps here celebrating a star of the silent silver screen for which this rag should be used as an accompaniment. Its form is AABBACCAAC whereby the AABBA- and CCAAC- strains are in the major keys of Bb and Eb respectively. In this adaptation for recorder quintet, the 1st tenor has his or her work cut out. Not only does he or she have all the melodies from start to finish but the final AA-strains scout along the upper limits of a tenor recorder with top D's and E's being called for. Very rewarding to master!
