As Apple-Jack was originally scored and composed by Johnson for full orchestra and mandolin club, I have no qualms whatsoever in adapting this charming rag for the recorder. Actually apple-jack is a spirit distilled from fermented apple juice and the rag, being more than somewhat spirited, certainly lives up to its namesake. Its form is classic in having a 4-bar introduction followed by 2 repeated 16-bar sections. A 16-bar joining passage, itself being a repeat of the 1st section, leads into the concluding trio. The whole is a happy, chirpy piece well within range of the beginner.
Apple-Jack was published by Vandersloot Music Pub. Co., Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA.
A tempo of 85 crotchets/min. is suggested.
