Published in sunny California, there is nothing frosty about Polar Bear Rag. It is a full-blooded barnstorming humdinger of a rag. Its form is somewhat complex but basically AABBACCDDDD with a 4-bar introduction whereby we progress through a variety of keys. The A-, B-, C- and D-strains are in the major keys of G, A, C and C respectively whereby the D-strains are progressively flatted culminating in the final D-strain which is in the recorder player's favourite key of Db. As a transcription for recorder, fiendishly difficult but immensely rewarding.
Polar Bear Rag was published by Wilson Music Pub. Co., San Francisco, California, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
