Length: approx. 3¾ mins. Sounds best if the tenor and bass are doubled.
The Cake Walk in the Sky is variously subtitled "March a la Ragtime" and "A Rag-Time Nightmare" on the cover of the original sheet music which also depicts happy winged dancers cakewalking to the strains of a harp under the benevolent gaze of a Negro St. Peter, the keys of heaven being hung from his girdle. The composition itself was a big hit and still recorded today. Its form is ABCCDE with an 8-bar introduction and written in F-major. In this transcription for recorder quintet, the happy, syncopated melodies are shared by the descant, who also alternates to tenor, and the treble and tenor voices. A great ensemble piece!
