The Amazon Rag is justly praised by
Trebor Jay Tichenor in his
That American Rag: The Story of Ragtime from Coast to Coast as the finest early ragtime from Cincinnati. Its form is ABACCDD and as transcribed for recorder ensemble, fiendishly difficult - mostly due to the broken chords spread between the voices in the A-strain. A delight to master however and is good preparation for the novelty works some 20 years later by
Zez Confrey et al. The final bars are scored 2nd time take descant. This is the editor's device to cope with the final chord. Some expert recorder players can possibly squeak out the top D, F and B by over-blowing instead of alternation.
The composer dedicated this little gem to the Amazon Canoe Club.
The Amazon Rag was published by
Miller-Arnold Publishing Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
