Old Swanee Rag is a tidy little descriptive folksy rag in AABBCB form with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AABB- and CB-.strains are in the major keys of C and F respectively. The introduction uses the opening phrase of Stephen Collins Foster's Way down upon the Swanee River and the following A-, B- and C-strains are scored Noontime in de cotton fields, Pickin' on de Banjo and Dancin' on de Levee respectively. The whole piece is characterised by close harmony between the treble and 1st tenor the rhythm section is fully occupied and has some nice touches with ascending dialogues. A great ensemble piece.
Old Swanee Rag was published by McKinley Music Co., Chicago & New York, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a treble solo version of this item.
