Big Foot Lou, a one-off cakewalk by Joseph Gearen, is distinguished by the use of "ragtime" in the finale. The piece itself is a spirited composition in AABBCDC form with a 4-bar introduction with many nice little touches. In this adaptation for recorder the melodies are shared by the treble and 1st tenor voices. The D-strain is characterised by dialogue between the upper and lower voices and the final "jazzed up" C-strain is pure ragtime fun. Judging by the cover of the original sheet music "Big Foot" Lou himself appears to have been a banjo player. Whether or not that he was a historical personage or a whimsical fiction remains lost in the ragtime history of more that a century ago.
