Coaxing the Piano, is another fantastic fun piece and the most difficult recorder adaptation to date. Straightaway in the 8-bar introduction, enormous demands are placed on the rhythm section. Each bar opens with a triplet followed by quaver pairs giving the extraordinary illusion of acceleration promptly succeeded by deceleration whereby in fact the time remains constant. Not only is the timing difficult but the triplets themselves are shared among the three lower voices requiring meticulous tonguing! The descant voice requires both
Patience and
Fortitude (the capitals are deliberate!) whilst the treble and 1st tenor carry the bulk of the melody and "raggedness". This work also reflects the transition from ragtime to jazz - another must for any progressive recorder ensemble!
