As Ik letzt to'n Maak gung

This is a jolly, accumulative song about going to market and buying various animals starting with a cock. It then goes on to buying a cat, a dog, a horse then a wife and finally a child from the resulting marriage. Its lyrics are very reminiscent of the English folksong I went to Market .
Bernd Gerken sang it in a gay, rollicking manner at a rather quick space. Singing it is not easy as it is quite tongue-twisting, even for Germans. It was always a great favourite both with ourselves as with the audiences. My part was play a simple melodic accompaniment on the penny whistle.
