I learned "The star of the County Down" from Brian Kelly who in singing it always gave his considerable best. The tune is very beautiful and I find the lyrics delightfully Irish e.g. "Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself to see if I was really there". Ah dearie me, where is young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann?
This song is well known in Germany and I've heard German lyrics in the Pinökel. I recall on one occasion being asked by a German audience to sing "Bantree (sic) Bay" and couldn't make head nor tail of it until they sang the tune and then it dawned on me that "The Star of the County Down" was meant.
