Cockles and Mussels was learned at my mother's knee. It was sung in my primary school, St. Stephen's School, Worcester, England as it no doubt it was in every corner of Britain and the entire British Empire. It was one of the first Irish songs studied by the "Idle Fellows" with whom I played for some 12 years. The Idle Fellows did it slowly and deliberately, each singer taking a verse, allowing plenty of time for instrumentals.
