Pastime Rag No. 4 is logically the fourth of Matthews Pastime Rags (but was printed 2 years after the fifth!) of which Rudi Blesh wrote in his Classic Piano Rags as being "virtuosic, wide ranging in concept and a five-chapter synopsis of the St. Louis ragtime scene. This particular rag is noted for and characterised by its jangling, "crazy" chords in the A-strain - perhaps so much so that its publication was delayed. Its form is a straightforward AABBCC with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the major keys of F and Bb respectively. This multi-chord "black" piece demands exquisite tonguing and is definitely only for the brave.
Pastime Rag No. 4 was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 74 crotchets/min. is suggested.
