Pastime Rag No. 5 is logically the fifth of Matthews Pastime Rags (but was printed 2 years before the fourth!) of which Rudi Blesh wrote in his Classic Piano Rags as being "virtuosic, wide ranging in concept and a five-chapter synopsis of the St. Louis ragtime scene. This particular rag is noted for and characterised by its tango bass, something that bass recorder players can really get their mouths about. Its form is AABACCDD with a 4-bar introduction and the whole written in G-major. In accordance with its title, it would be the ideal programme item to complete a recorder recital of Matthews pastimes by a courageous ensemble.
Pastime Rag No. 54 was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 84 crotchets/min. is suggested.
