Contentment is a rag composition with a story. Apparently it was first written in 1909 and was inspired by the contentment perceived by Lamb regarding the year-long marriage between his publisher, John Stark and his wife. Accordingly he dedicated this piece to contented pair as an anniversary present. The work was tendered to Stark at a time when he had recently returned from New York back to St. Louis. Sadly his wife died shortly thereafter and as a result it took the Stark some 6 years before he felt able to publish it in 1915. The publication has no dedication and the cover of the original sheet music shows a contented old man quietly smoking a pipe and blowing smoke rings. No word of its inspiration is given. The rag itself is a charming affair in AABBACDD form and will certainly give contentment to performers and audiences alike!
Contentment was published by the Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a treble solo version of this item.
