John Philip Sousa  (1854-1933)
Last updated: 14.10.17
According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, John Philip Sousa was an American band-conductor and composer of marches ("The Washington Post", "Stars and Stripes Forever", etc.); also of "El Capitán" and other operettas. The story that his name was a fabrication to include the letters USA is itself a fabrication.
The above dictionary entry does little to justice to Sousa's extraordinary career. He was born in Washington, D.C. and in 1867 his father, John António de Sousa, apprenticed his 13-year old son to the United States Marine Corps after foiling a romantic attempt to run away and join a circus. After several years he left the Corps to join a theatrical band. He started conducting and then rejoined to the U.S. Marine Band as its director in 1880. During this time, Sousa also led the marching band of Gonzaga College High School. In 1892 Sousa founded his own band which toured widely, and in 1900 represented the United States at the Paris Exposition before touring Europe. A man of strong opinions, he detested ragtime leaving his trombonist Arthur Willard Pryor to manage this distasteful (for him that was) aspect of popular music. He vehemently spoke against the advance of "talking machines" at a congressional hearing in 1906. Later he could not be persuaded to conduct on the radio, fearing the lack of personal contact with the audience. It was only in 1929 that his objections were overcome before making very successful broadcasts.
An all-rounder, he was also variously an author, a great horseman, trap-shooter and freemason.
