Arthur Marshall  (1881-1968)

According to the Internet source given below, Arthur Marshall was an American ragtime composer. He was raised in the same area as Scott Hayden (also a collaborator with Scott Joplin). He had, however had some classical training and mastered both the piano and syncopation. He collaborated with Joplin with Swipesy (1900) and it was also Joplin who encouraged him to study at George R. Smith College, Sedalia and helped him gain employment at the legendary Maple Leaf Club.
During his career he briefly joined Hayden in Joplin's Drama Company as well as becoming a resident player in Thomas Million Turpin's famous Rosebud Saloon (immortalised in Joplin's The Rosebud March (1905)). He went to Chicago in 1906 and back to St Louis in 1910 and then to Kansas City in 1917 where he retired as a pianist.
When Rudi Blesh's Women Composers of Ragtime appeared in 1950, Arthur Marshall once more became a public figure and even composed a little again, three of his final works appearing in later editions of "They All Played Ragtime".
