 Jean Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Jean Baptiste Lully [originally Giovanni Battista Lulli] was an Italian-born composer who was taken in boyhood to France and first worked there as a scullion, then as a violinist. Wet into service of Louis XIV, 1652; naturalised French, 1661; achieved the supreme musical position at court, 1662. Himself a dancer, collaborated with Molière in comedy ballets; from 1663 wrote operas. Wrote also church music, dance music, etc., and established the "French Overture". A brilliant intriguer; obtained a monopoly of opera production in France; made a fortune by speculation; injured his foot with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor, and died of the resulting abscess.
Lully also has "Die Musikanten" published in Spielstücke Für Blockflöte Und Gittarre.
