According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a German composer, fifth child of Johann Sebastian Bach, pupil of his father. Domestic musician to Frederick the Great of Prussia, until assuming a church post at Hamburg in 1767. Noted keyboard-player, adapting his music progressively to suit trend from harpsichord to piano; wrote a treatise on keyboard-playing. Works, showing departure from J.S. Bach's style towards that of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, including keyboard concertos and sonatas, symphonies, chamber music; also oratorio and church music.
