Home | Recorder Music | Composers B | Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) |
For me, Bach is absolutely the tops! Not only was he a genius playing so many instruments such as clavichord, harpsichord and organ he was a most amazing man as a human being having had two wives and twenty children, many of whom were themselves notable musicians. In his time, according to an obituary notice, reported by The Oxford Companion to Music by Dr Scholes, he was the greatest organ and clavier player that had ever lived. He established order in the musical world regarding the piano and enabled we much lesser mortals access to a predictable system (think about his "well-tempered clavier").
I am always impressed how readily his music is adapted by such diverse media as the "traditional" chamber music in any ensemble of instruments whatsoever, choral works, my humble concertina, the synthesiser à Walter Carlos (later Wendy Carlos) and even recorder music.
For the biographical record he was born in Germany (actually Thuringia, if we want to be precise) in 1685 and died in Leipzig at the age of 65.
Bach has two items from BWV 1 and BWV 245 in Weihnachtliche Musik Alter Meister Für Blockflötenquartett as well as Gavotte, Polonaise, Menuett in Flötenbüchlein für kleine Leute (D/D/A) and Flötenbüchlein für kleine Leute (D/D).
